GREAT NORTHERN PIANO SESSION III

IMPRESSIVE LINE UP GRACES THIRD GREAT NORTHERN PIANO SESSION

The third instalment of the Great Northern Piano Session, put together as part of the Atmospherica Concert Series, has a typically varied line up with a little of something for everyone. This is not your everyday common or garden classical piano concert.  It will feature live piano accompaniment to a stunning video art installation from a collaboration between Frankfurt -based composer Garreth Broke and artist Anna Salzmann. It will also feature the stunning soundscapes of the critically acclaimed Suffolk based duo Pianofield, who make modern classical electronic music from piano and found sound.  Atmospherica founder and award winning composer Steve Luck, completes the line-up performing pieces from his latest album ‘Collected Piano Solos – Volume 1.

Broke and Salzmann’s album collaboration is called ‘Healing’ and the record will be released by 1631 Recordings / Decca in October 2019. A musical response to 11 abstract art pieces by Salzmann, the pieces that make up Healing are by turns tender, melancholy and ultimately redemptive. Designed to be performed live with an accompanying art projection featuring the 11 art pieces on the big screen, the Healing album is unique, innovative and profoundly moving.

Pianofield is a collaboration between pianist and established composer Frances Shelley and engineer, Matthew Bickerton. Both share an abiding love for sound as well as for planet earth.  Combining these two drives, they formed Pianofield in 2016.  They have given regular festival performances exploring the connection between the environment and the human. Fresh from shows at Latitude festival and as part of the international Piano Day celebrations they will bring their live show to the Civic Theatre in Gosforth. Thomas Dolby describes the music as ‘Slow burning atmospheric beauty, an otherworldly landscape that takes you to another time and space’

Steve Luck’s ‘Collected Piano Solos-Volume I’ is described as “achingly beautiful....contemporary piano music that has a wistful, longing quality but at the same time is uplifting, joyous and life-affirming. It is a gorgeously melodic collection of work.”
The concert will take place on Thursday 26th September at 7.30pm at Gosforth Civic Theatre NE3 3HD. Tickets are priced at £10 and are on sale from the Gosforth Civic Theatre web site at https://www.gosforthcivictheatre.co.uk/great-north-piano-session-iii
