Kev of @RFTKPromotions talks about the 1st #metal2themasses @BloodstockFest competition final for #unsigned/#indiebands in the #northeast

RFTK Promotions in Association with
Bloodstock: Metal 2 The Masses presents
For the very first time...

This is very good news for the region.  Bloodstock Metal 2 The Masses is a battle of the bands contest where a band from each region goes on to play at Bloodstock Festival, the UK's biggest Metal Festival.

The contest has been running many years, but this is the first time the region will be represented - taking this year's contest to 26 regions and counting.

The premise is simple - it is a battle of the bands consisting of heats, semi-finals and a final - with the regional winner playing the NEW BLOOD STAGE at Bloodstock in 2016.  This stage gets estimated crowds of 2000 fans who are hungry for new music.
Bands such as Evile, Bloodshot Dawn and Saturnian are amongst those who've gone on to do world tours or sign to major record labels since coming through this route.  Evile have just toured with Megadeth.

The Newcastle final takes place in The Cluny on June 17th.  Semi-Finals will take place in Think Tank on May 15th and 29th.

Before those, the heats, they're in Trillians Rock Bar on Feb 25th, March 31st, April 7, April 14 and April 28.

These are priced at £3 for the heats, £4 for the Semi's and £5 to the final, so fans can see quality local bands at a low price, giving more scope that they can have a night out and discover new bands, or support a friend without breaking the bank and hopefully see some of the other talent in the region.

The local promotion for these shows is being run by RFTK Promotions, with help from Jowheretogo PR.  RFTK Promotions has been through a number of changes over the last few years, but the essence began in 2006 when Kev Morris decided to try and do something about his favourite bands not playing Newcastle.

"We've all been there," explains Kev, "Picking up listings and seeing a band you love is touring and then checking the dates and finding there's nothing in Newcastle.  So. I decided to learn how to put on shows - 10 years and 200 shows later, here we are..."

Speaking about the Bloodstock Metal 2 The Masses competition, "I'd always thought it such a shame the contest didn't run in this region.  Selby does have rounds, but nothing in Newcastle and we've a whole host of talented bands here that deserve a shot."
"I think this should be exciting for the bands and for the fans.
"For the bands it represents a genuine path to play at a major festival - and even if the band doesn't win, we're hoping this will shine some publicity on some of the heavier bands in the region.
"For the fans we're hoping this will introduce them to some new bands - and see a lot of fine bands for the region"

For bands wishing to enter - simply email - send over some links for your music and a brief intro (we'll be asking partcipating bands for more info when the heats are being pulled together).  Bands should fit musically with the Bloodstock Festival (there will be judges from Bloodstock at the final) - so should be familiar but a general guide includes but is not limited to : Speed, Thrash, Death, Doom, Folk, Battle, Gothic, Grove, MetalCore, Industrial, Neo-Classical, Nu, Post, Power, Progressive, Sludge, Stoner, Alternative, Extreme, Symphonic, Viking and more!

Bands should be unsigned or on a DIY/Small label.  Any band on a recognised major cannot be accepted.

Bands from throughout the region (Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, Northumberland, Teeside, etc.) all welcome to apply.

#LastJoker from @AgenturEAM with @ANewNowhere @SaintsOfArcadia @OnceMoreRoundUK at @O2Academynew 29/1/16

Last Joker To Play the O2 Newcastle
Saints of Arcadia
Once More Round
A New Nowhere

Last Joker was formed by Miguel Mega, portuguese guitar player, in the late eighties in
Santos, São Paulo, Brazil.
In 1990 Last Joker recorded their first demo tape with the songs Without You, Last
Joker, Hold on Tight and Every Night and started a career playing for eager
crowds in the São Paulo state. Because of their musicality , stage presence and sold out
concerts they got the attention of Metal Rock Records and recorded their first LP simply
called Last Joker and toured Brazil supporting bands such as Sepultura, Angra, Dr.
Sin, RDP among others. In the middle nineties the band broke up and Miguel Mega moved
to LA and started a solo career and released around 10 instrumental solo cds and
appeared on several compilations alongside Greg Howe (Howe II, Michael jackson, Maragold), Kiko Loureiro (Angra, Megadeth) among others.

In 2014 Miguel Mega moved to the UK and regrouped Last Joker with singer Roddy B. (Avenger, Abbadon), guitarist Yves Martian, bassist Al Pringle and drummer Adam Proud and have just recorded their new cd release for Into the Limelight Records,
Last Joker - Ulterior Motives and have released the video clip for the single Kissed by the Lake.
When the A&R scouts of Into The LimeLight Records listened to the new material it was clear that this was something different.
Refreshing, fantastic rock songs, catchy and with a quality you may expect of these very experienced musicians. Reason to offer a contract straight away.

Last Joker are playing the O2 Academy in Newcastle on the 29th January 2016.

Review: @Blamed4Nothing @Destructo9000 and @BLKATOMMOVEMENT at @WeAreThinktank 20/11/2015

Black Atom Movement are a highly skilled duo. They manage to blend Iommi-like guitar, Grohl-like drums and Kilmister-like vocals in a blues metal mix to create a massive sound with just two instruments. I particularly enjoyed The Sheriff,a very bluesy number. A wireless connection for the guitar might be advisable, as vocalist and guitarist Aaron is very twisty turny on stage and kep pulling the lead out. Set yourself free Aaron!

Andrew O'Neil performed a stand-up set, which was a pleasant change. This was a veritable variety evening!Mr O'Neil entertained with stories and improvised songs from the satirical to the surreal. He's an appealing character onstage and this continued into the Men Who Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing set, as he is the guitarist and second on vocals.

The Men who Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing specialise in songs telling tales of the Victorian era. The music itself, however, ranges from political punk like Doing it For The Whigs, to folk, to the waltzing lament of  How I Became an Orphan: Victorian diseases could rob one of ones family and friends.

The Men Who...are highly entertaining as a live band, they've cornered the market in Victorian subject matter. Songs about Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and Charles Darwin are not something you find often.
The show is anything but Victorian in its volume however, shredding of guitar and pounding of drum was interspersed with bow-played carpentry saw. Frontman Gerhard "Andy" Heintz struck a striking figure in his long dress coat and top hat and can be mildly menacing in a good way.The band got the crowd moving and joining in with choruses to make it a splendid, all round night of entertainment.

I got all the way through the review without once mentioning steampunk...

@vamos_social : a versatile cultural hub in the heart of #Newcastle

Get social with iVAMOS! at the heart of Newcastle!

Sharing the same building as Jowheretogo PR is a real cultural gem in the city centre:

Newcastle’s new cultural hub iVAMOS! Social, which is delivered by ¡VAMOS! and Breeze Creatives, has opened its doors and is set to present an up-and-coming programme of Latin infused events at its Market Street residence.

Located on the ground floor of Bamburgh House which already hosts various creative organisations under its roof, its reformation has transformed the venue from a previous nightclub into a social space that runs both day and night in partnership with Northeast arts organisation, Breeze Creatives.

iVAMOS! Social founder and iVAMOS! Festival Director Nik Barrera said: “iVAMOS! Social aims to introduce a vibrant community centre for everyone from Wednesday to Saturdays by offering food and drinks, DJ events, live music and film screenings. Plans for development in the near future includes workshops, markets, exhibitions, talks and hot-desking opportunities.

A permanent residence for the region born renowned Latin festival iVAMOS!, which celebrated its’ 10th Anniversary in June 2015, hosted five events including exhibition openings, film screenings and international DJS in its new social space as part of its debut.

Nik Barrera added: “This is finally a place for us to call home. It might not be entirely iVAMOS! festival related after this opening but iVAMOS! will be at the heart of what happens here.”

iVAMOS! Social officially opened its doors on 26th September 2015 with its first monthly edition of World Disco, featuring a myriad of tunes from different locations such as Afro house beats, Iranian pop, Bollywood and Brazil Disco. Other monthly series introduced at the space within the last few weeks included ‘Mi Casa Su Casa’ (featuring Salsa tunes), ‘Masterjamz’ (an 80s/funk jams night), ‘Kizomba’ (playing sensual, Angolan-originated beats) and much more to come.

Since the opening on 30th of October as a dynamic daytime hub, ¡VAMOS! Social has been embraced by everyone delighted by its transformation from a former nightclub. A variety of Latino cuisine is found on the simple and fun bar menu, such as the Bocadillo (Spanish style sandwiches), Charcuteria meat plates and Boquerones (a white anchovies meal) along with Colombian and El Salvador coffee and organic teas.

The Ladies From Midnight Blue, at the Launch,
A brand new residency Rubix will also feature – offering a world music series launching on Saturday November 7 with Auntie Flo, Contours and more. Auntie Flo push a unique ‘Afro-futurist’ sound and garnered a ‘Scottish Album of the Year’ award nomination for his album release,  Future Rhythm Machine. It was also rated as one of the best albums of 2012.  DJ Tom Burford started ‘Contours’ as a project that incorporate beats from Africa and Latin America to explore an eclectic, fusionist rhythm between jazz, Afro-beat, electronic, house and soul music. Contours is the co-founder of Newcastle based Rubix club night and we’re thrilled to have them part of the ¡VAMOS! Social journey!

Specially selected beers for ¡VAMOS!

¡VAMOS! Social is located on Level 1 Bamburgh House, Market Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 6BH. Open from Wednesday to Saturday from 12pm to 12am.

There's #onlythenow and #ageisjustanumber Review: Tom Robinson at @Sage_Gateshead #photos @FreshNet

Tom Robinson
Mighty Sword of Justice Tour
at The Sage, Gateshead 09/11/2015

Tom Robinson is known to many as the voice on BBC6Music with his unique Saturday Night Show with its blend of the classic and brand new. Tom is on tour after the release of his album Only The Now, his fist studio album in nearly 20 years.

Hall 2 at The Sage was first entertained by a short set of eclectic songs, about, or related to, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, by Kitten Pyramid. The band on this occasion only consisted of frontman Scott Milligan (on various instruments) and his son Tom on drums. I found this interesting prog music for a live gig though perhaps would not be my personal choice of CD for a long journey.

Tom Robinson took to the stage to perform two sets with a short voice break in between. He mixed the old and the new with the audience joining in with such classics as Martin and Glad to be Gay but also with new tracks like Risky Business and Mighty Sword of Justice. Tom did some lyrical tweaking with older songs to fit the current political climate. Don’t Jump Don’t Fall was an emotional reminder of the dangers of falling off the edge of society when there are no mental health safety nets.

Tom had a quality band with him including Adam Phillips on guitar and Lee Forsyth Griffiths providing acoustic guitar, vocals and in set 2, one of his own songs, Meet Me In The Middle. His song met with the approval of the friendly Sage crowd.

Gerry Diver added keys and violin and Faithless’s Andy Treacey provided percussion. The whole band put so much into the songs that War Baby sounded fresh as it did in the 80’s. Only The Now is a touching reminder to stop worrying about the past and future and live in the present. That’s really what this album and tour is about, if you want to do something with your life, there’s no time like the present.

Tom still plays with an energy, enthusiasm and a disregard for the fourth wall, that less experienced artists could learn from. He balanced the old and new songs keeping the audience with him all the way. 2,4,6,8 Motorway had most of the crowd on their feet for an extended singalong. This was a gig that made my heart grow a couple of sizes, with the warmth going between Tom and his fans. I would happily do this gig again! Tom is living proof that age is just a number and there is indeed Only The Now.

@CherieCurrie3 Chats to Jo about her tour and the gig at @GlobeNewcastle in 14th Nov with @LGDreamers and @RFTKPromotions

Cherie Currie Chats To Jo
About Her First Tour In 20 Years

Cherie Currie is famous for her time as the lead singer in The Runaways in the mid to late 70’s. She’s had success as a solo artist, actress, wood carver and author since, and she’s heading to Newcastle on tour,  on 14th November.

JO: First of all thanks for taking time out to talk to us at NE Volume/Jowheretogo. I'm sure you are very busy or just craving some nap time between all this travelling?

CC: Well, the heat here in LA has sidelined me from carving.  Thank God for the kindness and patience of my clients who are willing to wait until I return from the UK.

JO: How's the tour so far? Good band to work with?

CC: The guys are great.  Alexx Michael put together a great band for this tour and he worked so hard to make sure the fans are thrilled with the shows.

JO: It's interesting tour in that you have chosen some really down-to-earth venues. For example the Globe pub in Newcastle, a really intimate venue. Is this you wanting to get closer to your fans on your first solo tour?

CC: I have always wanted to be close to the fans.  If it were not for them, this wouldn't be happening.  I am so appreciative that they never forgot me or The Runaways.  They kept us alive for 40 years!

JO: UK crowds...versus US crowds (we've calmed down since punk), who is best to play for, or an unfair comparison to make?

CC: I won't know that until I play but I have no doubt it will be a great reunion!

JO: We are talking 40 years since the Runaways were put together, and yet you still seem to ooze rock and roll cool. Have you any advice for young rockers (male and female) to keep their careers and themselves alive?

CC: My only advice is, don't ask anyone’s opinion nor advice.  Everyone has their path that is their own.  You can't ask anyone to relate to what is burning inside you, what drives you.  They have their path and you have yours.  Stick to your path and never let anyone sway your conviction.  It never ends well.

JO: Do you think if some of the more traumatic events in your early career hadn't happened, you may not have been the artist you are today? Did it all make you more resilient?

CC: Yes.  It led me, each experience, to where I am now.  I don't blame anyone.  I except full responsibility for my good and bad choices.  That alone is empowering.

JO: Reverie...your first album since the 80s, how would you describe it? And will it be on sale at the gigs?
Yes it will be available at the shows.  I am blessed that it happened, that my son Jake got to work with Kim Fowley before he died and how this record brought me full circle.  It was important.

Two fan questions:

Gemma M Anderson asks: What do you love more...singing or chainsaw carving?

CC: I love both.  I was born to do them both and will continue to do what I'm passionate about.  As everyone should.  We were all put here for a reason and only we know what that is.  I'm blessed that I didn't let fear or others “opinions” stop me.  If I have learned anything in my 56 years, it's that lesson.

Jim Darmody asked:  Do you have any memorable moments from the first time you played Newcastle?

CC: To be honest, that tour was a whirlwind.  It was like being on another planet with the punk movement.  I look so forward to playing there now where it won't be such a blur.

Cherie is playing the Globe Pub on Railway Street, Newcastle NE4 7AD

@freshnet Tom Robinson new album #OnlyTheNow on tour including @Sage_Gateshead 9th November

Tom Robinson Releases ‘Only The Now’
New Album Out October 16th
Featuring John Grant, Nadine Shah, Billy Bragg and Many More

Inspired by the new music he has heard through his 6 Music shows, Tom Robinson has returned with his first new album in twenty years 'Only The Now' a record made with award-winning producer and multi-instrumentalist Gerry Diver and released on his own Castaway Northwest Recordings.

‘After my second child was born in 1997 I took a break from recording and did more radio work’ says Tom. ‘Both my kids are now grown up now, I've turned 65, the decks are clear, and my musical tastes have changed enormously since working at 6 Music. I've finally met the right producer for all the songs I've had on a backburner for the last 15 years, and the record has exceeded my wildest expectations. Gerry creates the kind of fresh, adventurous noises I actually enjoy listening to - and playing on the radio - in 2015.’

Guest appearing on 'Only The Now' include John Grant, Nadine Shah, Colin Firth, Billy Bragg, Ian McKellen, Lisa Knapp, TV Smith and Nitin Sawhney.

The record will be 6 Music's Album Of The Day this Tuesday October 13th, and the same day Tom will receive the prestigious BASCA Gold Badge award on alongside Peter Gabriel, Mark King, Chris Wright, Leo Sayer and Kim Wilde among others.

Stephen McNeff, Chairman of BASCA said: “we are delighted to recognise the unique contribution each person announced today has made to the professional lives of songwriters and composers.  This is a truly diverse and inspirational group of people, champions of British music who have worked in the public eye and behind the scenes to ensure music is heard and thrives.  BASCA takes pride in the opportunity to honour them at the Gold Badge Awards on 13th October.” More infor and full list of recipients is at at
