#review @consettfestival a great family music festival

It Was Spring at Consett Rugby Club, Even If The Weather Didn't Know!

Consett festival is a real community festival where local businesses get together and bring in local bands and traders to create a great day out for  families from Consett and beyond.

Having missed the Friday night acoustic gig with the amazing Driven Serious headlining, I brought my 10 year old along to enjoy what Consett Festival had to offer. We first visited the  double decker Farmyard Flyer bus, with its menagerie of farmyard animals including very hungry lambs to be bottle fed, ducks, poultry, a pig and some very cute rabbits. We continued into the site following the recognisable sound of Black Nevada. The band do heavy rock with a good foundation of melodic intelligence.

After a visit to the hog roast stall where, young 'un got a portion way too big for him, we returned to the main tent to find Jen Stevens and The Hiccups, a fabulous live band who are always gigging. I always prefer to hear Jen's original tracks but at a festival like this the opinion is that the crowd like to hear some familiar covers, and this band are more than capable of delivering.
Peculiar Disco Moves put on a set in their own unique style and showcased their new single "Lost For Words (Please Don't Tell Me, Please Don't Say", which is out on 9th May with a launch gig at Newcastle's Institute for Mining. The single is all about the loss of familiar useful objects and their replacement by things of a digital nature. Check out the time-travelling video on YouTube.

For kids: a climbing wall, zorbing (those massive hamster balls for people), shooting (in an enclosed area), cake decorating, face painting, fairground rides, and lots of meaty food. Indeed a vegetarian could struggle, but there was a pizza stall, and a chip van just outside the site. There were raffles, craft stalls, handmade sweet stalls, plenty for every taste.

Spirits were high despite the slightly damp conditions after the previous night's downpour. But the rain kept away for most of the day. The large selection of delicious real ales and a cocktail bar did contribute to a mellow atmosphere. Sadly only allowed myself a half of very tasty IPA as I knew I had the drive back to Gateshead to look forward to.

There was a mini "battle of the bands", acoustic sets from Meghan, and Hannah Lamb, The Me Me's and the evening was finished off by the very popular Ska Toons.

Consett Festival is a very good value way of experiencing live music, a day to spend with the family and forget about your troubles. A great day out.
