Two years ago, during the 2014 Americana Music Festival, three songwriters met for the first time at a café in East Nashville. What followed on from that meeting became one of the most warmly received albums of 2016 when it was released by vinyl specialists Gearbox Records. James Toseland may be viewed as having a slightly charmed life. Blessed with good looks, perfect teeth and a pretty successful career in motorbike racing (until he got injured), he then goes and convinces Toby Jepson (a rock star in his own right in the Little Angels and now a producer and writer) that he can be a rock singer. Opening for Toseland and for Chrome Molly were Great Man Theory. Now, I had heard a couple of their early tracks when playing them on my Jowheretogo Show on NE1fm (Thursdays 10-12). Rocking The 'Dog Good and Proper Brewdog pub, down at the bottom of Dean Street was pleasantly populated with enthusiastic punters, lubricated with nice beer.This was a free gig, sponsored by NARC, but even a free gig can be hard to fill of a Thursday night when the students are away and people are on their holidays. So it was great to see a healthy sized crowd. Cauls took to the "stage" a corner at the front of the pub and it was quickly apparent that photography wasn't going to be easy, low light and standing either behind a lot of big blokes or crouching in front of them. But we got by, we are professionals. Cauls created varying rock soundscapes, with slightly awkward lack of spacing between songs, maybe they were rushed. I felt we would enjoy the sound more if there were more engagement with the audience. I'm funny like that, I like a bit of interaction with my music, maybe I'm a bit greedy. Cruxshadows: worthy of much greater things, but always a big night of entertainment.   Legends as always, looks its best in the dark and so suited this gothic gig which was attended by a crowd which   filled the dancefloor with appreciative movement. The show started with Momento Mori, a band of 3 with a Numanesque sound bolstered by a bass and a guitar.  In fact, the frontman looks as though his mum may have met up with Gary back in the day, something about the eyes....They sounded good, I will have to revisit the CD I got of theirs a couple of years ago. Momento Mori put on a good show with good songs and an impression that they enjoy the music and their time on stage. I do recommend seeing this band.   Cygnosic took the stage with synths, sequencing and an accomplished guttural roar.
