SWIM SCHOOL @ NEWCASTLE HEAD OF STEAM

THURSDAY 14 APRIL 2022

Newcastle’s Head of Steam venue is something of a rite of passage for up-and-coming independent acts and Swim School are the latest in a long line to crack the boards at the intimate venue on their way to much bigger things. The Scottish band are becoming well known for their energetic live shows in support of debut EP, Making Sense of it All, released to broad plaudits in August last year and this standalone headliner is the perfect chance to catch them before this year’s festival season begins.

Formed in Edinburgh in 2018 after meeting at music college, Swim School dived headlong into the Scottish independent scene with their own blend of indie-pop influenced by the likes of The Cure, Pale Waves and Wolf Alice. Debut single, Sway, and a full Uk tour soon followed in late 2019 before the pandemic forced them shelve their live shows for almost 18 months. Returning with a new drummer the band premiered new material at last year’s Latitude Festival and the new songs are an evolution of the darker elements of the band’s EP rather than the dream pop of debut single Sway.

Lead singer Alice Johnson has previously said of the band, “when we started Swim School, we didn’t know what our sound was going to be, we just started to write a lot of songs. The more we wrote, the more our sound developed.” Swim School are vocalist Alice, Lewis Bunting on guitar, Matt Mitchell on bass and Billy McMahon on drums.
