Joanna Lumley - It's All About Me!

Wednesday 10 October, 7.30pm, Sage One

The legendary Joanna Lumley will embark on her first ever live tour, ‘It’s All About Me’, in autumn 2018, where she will take audiences through her hilarious and interesting adventures from her incredible career spanning more than four decades, recounting some never heard before stories.

She will also be joined on stage by friend and producer, Clive Tulloh, who will put to Joanna questions from the audience that they’ve always wanted to ask, making the show a unique and hilarious night to remember.

On announcing It’s All About Me, Joanna said: “The thought of this tour next year, travelling across the British Isles and Ireland, has completely taken over my waking hours. It’s utterly thrilling to start planning the stories I can tell, and the rapture (and gratitude, to be fair) with which I shall greet the audiences. Nothing like this has come my way before, and I may have to be dragged off with a hook at the end of each show. Oh people! This is especially for you from me, with masses of love. I think it will be fabulous.”

Joanna Lumley icon, national treasure, activist, comedy actress and all-round top girl is barely off our TV screens and appears to have been a permanent fixture in our sitting rooms since she burst onto our screens as Purdey in the New Avengers in 1976. Now in a nationwide tour she will take us through the random journey that started in London in the swinging 60’s. Beginning as Jean Muir’s house model and muse, progressing to becoming a full-blown photographic model, featuring in knitting patterns, mini-skirts, toothpaste commercials and the occasional front cover.

From there Joanna will share her stories of her acting career that includes Coronation Street, On the Buses, Dracula and as a brainwashed Bond Girl in Blofeld’s lair in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Joanna’s breakthrough role was as Purdey, a part for which over 800 girls auditioned. Purdey propelled her to instant fame and created one of the “must-have” hairstyles of the 1970s – the Purdey bob. She became a pin-up figure for a generation of British males who grew up watching her as the high-kicking action girl.

Alongside iconic hairstyles Joanna started to develop a nice side line as adventurer and activist; popping up all over the globe she was often seen gasping at the Northern Lights, turning her bra into espadrilles and finding the source of the Nile.

Then as Patsy Stone in Absolutely Fabulous she became a degenerate role-model for a generation. Winning two BAFTAs, Joanna emerged as one of the best comedy actresses of her generation. For 25 years the adventures of Patsy and Edina have sporadically lurched across our screens culminating in AbFab The Movie in 2016.

This intimate night with Joanna tells some of these tales and more as we gallop through almost 50 years in this business we call show.

At Last: The Etta James Story

Saturday 13 October, 7.30pm, Sage One

This smash-hit show saw its world premiere in Melbourne in 2013 and since then has packed theatres throughout Australia and New Zealand.

In 2016 the show returned to Melbourne for a sell-out season at The Arts Centre and July saw the show triumph for a third season at The Sydney Opera House. In the spring of 2017 At Last – The Etta James Story toured the UK, selling out theatres in London, Liverpool, Manchester and across the country, receiving five-star reviews and multiple standing ovations wherever it played.

Starring the sensational Vika Bull, At Last tells the story of soul legend Etta James’ turbulent life and features some of her most beloved songs including Tell Mama, Something’s Got A Hold On Me, Sugar On The Floor, the heart rending I’d Rather Go Blind, her iconic signature song At Last and more.

Vika puts her heart and soul into this unforgettable show and is joined on stage by some of Australia’s finest and funkiest musicians. During a long and tumultuous career that saw her win six Grammy Awards and a star on The Hollywood Walk Of Fame, Etta James has influenced a vast array of artists from Diana Ross, Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart and is acknowledged as inspiring the careers of a new generation of singers from Christina Aguilera, Joss Stone, Adele and the late Amy Winehouse.

Sadly, Etta’s frantic recording and touring schedule coincided with her ever-growing addiction problems and over time she not only sang the blues…she lived the blues. Mercifully, her passion for life and strength of character saw her conquer her demons and she continued to record and perform into her seventies. With respect, this is her story.

TUSK Festival: Terry Riley & Gyan Riley plus Maalem Houssam Gania & The Gnawa of Essaouira

Sunday 14 October, 7pm, Sage One

It’s hard to do justice in words to the influence of Terry Riley on so much adventurous music that has emerged over the past half century. Take his legendary In C, a simple piece of musical genius that still resonates as loudly in impact today and perhaps is achieving more widespread influence than ever currently since its first recorded appearance in 1968.

Add in his sublime minimalist keyboard recordings such as Shri Camel and A Rainbow In Curved Air, his early tape work, his collaborations with Pandit Pran Nath, John Cale, La Monte Young – a huge favourite on the TUSK team, a huge influence on our listening and so much of the music we love.

So it is fitting, in the year that TUSK makes the move to expand its reach into Sage One, that it is Terry Riley that takes us there. Terry will perform in a duo with his son Gyan, who has a growing discography of his own.

Hailing from Morocco’s Atlantic coast, Maâlem Houssam Gania is the youngest son of the late, revered Maâlem Mahmoud Gania and has grown up entrenched in the Gnawa culture of North Africa, playing the guimbri and singing from the Gnawa songbook since his earliest days.

In great demand in his home country for his performances at the Lila trance ceremonies, where people gather to dance, to commune with the spirits and be healed of their ailments, Houssam’s renown has spread to this continent of late with select appearances at European festivals and even collaborations with UK producer, James Holden.

At TUSK, Houssam will be performing an intimate set of deep and traditional Gnawa music with a small group accompanying on chorus and percussion.
